You know Kilimanjaro is a volcano, right?
Well deep under every volcano there are hot rocks with the potential to heat water as it is making its way to the surface, somewhere…….and in Kilimanjaro Region, that “somewhere” is Kikuletwa Hot Springs…….an absolute “Must Do” while in this amazing country.
A meandering drive from Moshi through rustic villages, lush market gardens, rural plains where the sight of Maasai tribespeople grazing their herds greets you at every turn…..and all to the spectacular backdrop of Kilimanjaro itself, brings you to the tropical oasis of this thermal vista.
Known locally as Chemka Hot Springs, ”Boiling”, so named because of the appearance of the water bubbling from deep underground.
The sparkling waters of Kikuletwa, surrounded by palm trees, giant bamboo and shaded by ancient ficus trees is a sacred location of the ancient Chagga tribespeople.
Today tourists and locals are welcomed everyday by cheerful young guides keen to ensure you a memorable experience with assistance in the water and providing their gayly decorated rubber floatation tubes for a totally relax, re-set and recharge.
If you’re lucky, they may even perform some of their acrobatic dives or spectacular trapeze performances for your entertainment.
Of course, if you choose to chill poolside, and dip your toes in the water, the tiny resident Red Garra fish will gently massage your feet with their caressing exfoliating treatment.
Outside the main gates, local foods, souvenirs, coffee and of course a very well chilled drink from one of the fresh air bars, are all part of this unique experience.
A full day trip with as much time as you like at the springs including lunch and entry is $120 US for the first guest and $65 US for each additional guest.
Or you can go on two wheels if bike riding is your passion.
Many tour guides offer both driven tours, or riding tours. Let one of our recommended reliable guides personalise your adventure, or we are happy to help you find a guide suited to your needs.
