Day Safaris Around Moshi – Lake Chala

Updated: Jun 2

Featuring spectacular views of the eastern side of Kilimanjaro, the two hour drive almost all the way to the Kenyan border from Moshi takes you to the shores of breathtaking Lake Chala.

A crater lake formed around 250,000 years ago which today straddles the Kenyan/Tanzanian border. Covering an expanse of 4.2 square kilometers, Lake Chala is a popular destination for water lovers offering canoeing and swimming at the water’s edge.

Perched high on the crater wall, the viewing rotunda captures the Lake’s panoramic expanse right across to the Kenyan landscape.

The deep underground waters captured within the crater are mysteriously buoyant and enhance the magnificent natural blue/greens of the surrounds reflecting magic shades of jade to delight any photographic enthusiast.

A number of guided walks offer a range of opportunities to view local flora, small reptiles, butterflies and a wide range of birdlife.

A walk to the viewing point on the crater wall is two kilometeres with the opportunity to enjoy a prepacked picnic lunch (Available from many outlets in Moshi) with magnificent views. Round trip takes about two hours, coffee and light lunch refreshments are available from the restaurant at the viewing rotunda.

The walk to the lake edge is a more rugged, well marked out steep descent into the crater itself. The full circumference of the crater wall can be walked, usually a good day trek.

Camping is available and affordable cabin accommodation with glorious sunrise views over the lake. Entry at the gate to the lake is reasonable.
