LION KING HOMESTAY
THE CULTURE
Cultural Experiences...
CULTURAL EXPERIENCES.
The energy driving Moshi is rapid, vibrant and chaotic. A charismatic mix of cultural influences, tribal traditions, and artisans creating and selling their wares right there on the street amid the frantic confusion of traffic and people.
Nestled at the foot of the world’s highest freestanding mountain, “the roof of Africa”, the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro, Moshi has attracted interest from adventure seekers, explorers, and other nations for centuries.
Traditional lands of many proud tribal people, dominated by the Maasai and the Chaggu tribes.
A visit to the eerie ancient Chagga village revealing a labyrinth of tunnels leading deep underground to waterways surging with ice cold run off from high on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and its minor peak Mawenzi.
Tunnels once used by the Chagga people to elude their enemies, and it is said, to dispose of slain intruders, cast into the waterways and vanished forever.
Once a central hub of German East Africa, many German legacies remain…. coffee plantations, fine beer making, interior rail line terminating at the stately Moshi Rail Station and an array of fascinating commerce architecture, dominant, among traditional local markets, dodgy high-rise structures – many never completed, and African single room grocery stores overflowing onto the street with colourful plastic everything!
French is still taught in many schools today, keeping a link to French visitors to coastal regions.
Many stories remain of the British rule in the Moshi region until Tanzanian independence in 1961.
Moshi today is the home of a strong Muslim community and the smiles of Indian business people welcome shoppers all around town.
Moshi today is one of the few city locations where women still dress in their traditional kitenge fabrics brightening the streets with colour in creative dresses fashioned by one of the many tailors still operating their businesses on the city footpaths.
