Africa could almost be where the concept of market selling began - before shops, there were Markets!
As the trendy Farmer’s Market became the place to hang out on Saturday morning or sell your home grown, organic, free range, handmade, fairtrade products throughout the western world, Africans had survived that way forever, bartering with cowrie shells or trade beads.
Today, in Tanzania as young innovative small business entrepreneurs explore exciting new skills, Farmer’s Markets are gaining popularity as a place to grow your business.
Most Saturday’s offer a boutique market nearby offering sourdough breads, cheeses, soaps, vegetables, coffee beans, wine, local crafts of course and amazing recycled glass homewares. NGO’s and empowerment driven projects leading the way with micro finance enterprises.
Of course, there are other great markets too. The textile markets, destination of every unwanted piece of clothing worldwide. Where a classic 1930’s Gucci gown can be picked up for a few thousand tzs shillings!
Everyday food markets stocking every edible and non-edible commodity known to these people. Amazing vibrant craft markets where artisans of every medium come to show their skill, sell, and of course network.
And there’s always plenty of food available. Local Somasas, Mundazi Buns, Chappatis, local favourite “Chips Mayai” and of course a huge array of rice dishes, if you dare...
Farmers Markets offer relaxed browsing and shopping for both locals and visitors…...for most other shopping expeditions, a guide is recommended, for both communication and personal security.
The Markets are just one of the amazing experiences you can have on holiday in Tanzania. To read more about the experiences and things you can do while holidaying in the area please visit our Cultural Experiences Page.
