Dr. Alistair Steel. Supporting His Belief in Better Education and Health, Everywhere!

Updated: 30 minutes ago

One of life’s absolute essentials, an excellent dentist. And that’s exactly what Dr. Alistair Steel (B.D.Sc.) is.

Referred to me 8 years ago, by my good friend and past dentist Dr Gabrielle O’Brien, Alistair, a proud supporter of my work in Tanzania, is also a dedicated philanthropist who firmly believes better Education and Health are two key needs in our world today.

Growing up and studying in Glasgow, Alistair moved to London after graduating from Glasgow University in 1990 where, through his work he soon became aware of the many health issues associated with poor lifestyle choices, particularly in oral care.

Disillusioned by a medical system failing to do enough for its patients, Alistair seized the opportunity to come to Australia after a bunch of Australians, based in London, taught him Aussie rules, and whet his appetite for a new life, down under.

Twenty years, and a lot of fillings on, today, Alistair conducts his clinic in Melbourne offering a diverse range of care options. First step is always hygiene and preventative care, while ongoing advanced studies enable Alistair and his team to treat a raft of complex dental issues.

Always keen to catch up on my work in Tanzania, Alistair was particularly touched recently to hear about Marisa, a young man with a dream to become a doctor and help his fellow Tanzanians overcome the many health issues born by intergenerational poverty in his country.

Moved by the personal challenges faced by a young Muslim in the medical field, Alistair quickly identified how my support over 5 years had encouraged Marisa to continue and stay true to his dream and shared how his family supported a number of social enterprises in Scotland. Alistair’s mother, even at 93, today remains patron of a well-known charity.

Two days later, Alistair gifted $500 to assist Marisa enroll to his third year of medicine.

Essential, and much appreciated dollars at a vital time in both my fundraising schedule, and Marisa’s life.

Marisa will start back in two weeks in the secure knowledge we are here for him, and he can continue working positively toward a goal which will bring meaningful change to his life and has the potential to impact the poor communities of Kaloleni, Moshi, Tanzania, and beyond.

There are many young adults like Marisa in my impact area in Tanzania, who dream of reaching their full potential and making life better in their country.

You too can help by donating to support my existing students and teachers, my NGO partners, my many development programs in the country, or join the magical journey of seeing a child bloom through your own personal care and financial support.

I am forever grateful for the support from Alistair and the difference these gifts make to the lives of children less fortunate.
