Do You Feel Safe In Tanzania?

The most asked question about my time there, and the easiest to answer.

Yes, I do because I respect the need for caution, security and being streetwise at all times.

And at the Lion King Homestay, guest security is paramount.

Askari (The Swahili term for ‘the one who keeps the property safe’) Anthony, Security Guard extraordinaire is diligent to the letter in keeping the Homestay property secure and well maintained to prevent intrusion on any level, even offering secure onsite parking for self-drive guests.

African homes have always been protected against intruders whether they be animal or human…..the tribal boma surrounded by thorny vegetation to discourage outside invasion.

More recent urban abodes enclosed by solid, high walls with imposing gates, bolted at every closure and finally padlocked until car access is required. Glass fragments or barbed wire atop the wall to stop even the most athletic, would-be thief.

Anthony has his own apartment in the Homestay grounds, residing onsite to ensure he has complete control of all thing's security. Taking one day per week personal time, returning to lock down the property in the evening.

Located in residential Soweto, where many Moshi families enjoy the community focused neighborhood, carefree sounds of children playing fills the air during guest afternoon walks or morning jogs. Pet dogs often acknowledge visitors passing and domestic roosters welcoming the dawn.

Inside the Homestay, bedroom doors are key locked for the security of guests and their property, guests managing their own key over their stay. Shared bathrooms and toilets all lockable for privacy.

External doors are key locked overnight by House Hostess Sophia before she retires. If a morning jog is your go-to, Sophia will check you out and ensure you’re familiar with local streets, parks, schools and religious precincts and provide you with our Homestay map of surrounds to keep you on track.

Do I feel safe in Tanzania……always, and so will you.
