Encouraging young men In Tanzania that housework and meal preparation are life skills and not gender roles, is more than just a hope for Team Vista, it a goal and one they are winning the battle with.

Following on from their Young Women’s Empowerment Program, launched 6 years ago, the Young Men’s Empowerment Program was started last year under the guidance of volunteer teacher Lembris Lotta and long-time Team Vista student, Dr Said Said.

A “No Holds Barred” approach was taken by Director Kerry Anne Frost when she developed the program for the boys. No area of personal hygiene, safe sex, women’s rights, or career opportunities has been left to the imagination.

All a little awkward for these mostly shy boys in the beginning, but nothing a few fun, skill-based learning activities wouldn’t help spike their enthusiasm. And, so it was this week, when we invited the 30 boys down to the Lion King Homestay for an introduction to Cycling Safaris and Tourism.

The boys learned lots about the health benefits of cycling and exercise, safety while out and about and of course, care and maintenance of their equipment.

The difference between cycling for recreation, competition and of course the most popular way to tour anywhere in the world right now, “On Two Wheels”.

Sponsored by OneLoveTanzania.com the boys enjoyed Pizza, Hotdogs and fruit and of course, the opportunity to ride quality, off road bikes.

A fabulous night for everyone, the boys engaged with the topic, and certainly kept the questions coming until eventually it was time to head back to Kaloleni.
